Vermiculite For Insulation powder

Vermiculite roof insulation is a lightweight, fire-resistant, and non-combustible material made from expanded mica minerals, providing excellent thermal and acoustic insulation. It is commonly used as a loose-fill in attics or as an aggregate in lightweight concrete for roof screeds, reducing thermal conductivity and energy consumption. Key Aspects of Vermiculite Roof Insulation:

  • Benefits: It acts as a fire-resistive barrier, reduces noise, is easy to apply, and can help keep buildings cool in the summer by reducing heat flow.
  • Applications: It can be used as loose-fill in roofs/attics or mixed with cement to create lightweight, insulating concrete for roof decks.
  • Performance: Vermiculite concrete improves thermal efficiency while reducing the dead load on building structures.
  • Important Safety Warning: Older, loose-fill vermiculite insulation (particularly from the Libby, Montana mine, popular in the U.S. before the 1990s) may be contaminated with asbestos. It is critical to assume older insulation might be hazardous and avoid disturbing it.
  • Alternatives: Modern vermiculite is generally safe and non-toxic, but testing is advised for older, existing installations.
For installations, it is recommended that vermiculite concrete roof deck systems be applied by professionals familiar with the material.

Vermiculite is a hydrated magnesium aluminum sheet silicate mineral closely related to mica, and has all of the thermal and chemical resistance mica is known for. When subjected to heat, vermiculite expands and forms particles that are revered for being:
Lightweight
Incombustible
Compressible
Highly absorbent, soaking up to three times its volume in water
Non-reactive
Highly effective in cation exchange capacity
Vermiculite is found all over the world, including Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Kenya, Russia, South Africa, Uganda, USA and Zimbabwe. Speciality Vermiculite mines and processes vermiculite concentrate in facilities located in Enoree, South Carolina. Vermiculite is mined using open cast mining techniques where the ore is separated from other minerals and then screened or classified into several basic particle sizes.
